Dear Friends and Allies, On Saturday, September 27th, 2008 from 2 to 4 pm, the Deaf community, deaf people and hard of hearing people, family, friends and allies of the Deaf community are once again invited to attend our 2nd annual International Day of Deaf People and Sign Languages rally in downtown Norfolk at City Hall. For two hours, from 2 pm to 4 pm, come join and support the Deaf community of Hampton Roads and all of southeastern Virginia. This is a rally for us to come together to celebrate our being Deaf, to celebrate our language, American Sign Language, and you come together to define what needs to be done for our Deaf community to get rid of AUDISM. AUDISM is like racism, sexism, ageism... except it is discrimination against deaf and hard of hearing people. AUDISM is discrimination and oppression, fear of, hatred and scorn, ignorance and apathy, and patronization (belief that hearing people know what's best for deaf people, instead of asking knowing Deaf adults) of deaf people and especially deaf children. COME SHOW SUPPORT!!! Please come support your Deaf community for this very, VERY important rally. We will have speakers, performances, interpreters and will allow people who come to speak out. This event will happen if rain or shine. Bring chairs, umbrellas (if needed) and your families. Wear black t-shirts. To get to City Hall of Norfolk, take 64 to 264 West. Exit at Waterside (#9). At the first light, make a right onto St. Paul Blvd and then an immediate right onto City Hall Ave. The parking garage is straight ahead. I will be there! WE NEED YOU THERE! END AUDISM NOW!" I plan to see you there!!! Sincerely, Star Glynis Grieser, President Southeastern Virginia Society of the Deaf |
