Sometimes, medical service providers fail or refuse to provide qualified sign language interpreters to their patients who are deaf or hard of hearing and need an interpreter to communicate. When this happens, the medical service providers illegally discriminate against these patients.

Hospitals wont provide an American Sign Language Interpreter???
Call the Patient Advocate at the hospital and tell them! Remember, you must ask for an interpreter as soon as you walk in the door or as soon as you make an appointment. Any time ANY hospital turns down a request for a qualified ASL interpreter, first contact the hospital's Patient Advocate.....
Your Doctor / Lawyer won't hire an interpreter?
Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Erika Rockwell, Interpreter Service coordinator. She will explain your rights to your doctor/lawyer and will also be able to coordinate an interpreter for you.
Phone: (804) 662-9793
Email: isp@DDHH.state.VA.US
Be sure to have the name and phone number of your doctor/lawyer and if you have any hand-written notes, KEEP THEM, proving that your doctor or lawyer refused to hire an interpreter.
If your doctor or lawyer still refuses, call: Virginia Office of Protection and Advocacy 1-800-552-3962 - Remember, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!
